Thanks in large part to team owner J. Wallace Page's "Page Woven Wire Fence Company," the town of Adrian, Michigan, was a hub of baseball activity at the turn of the century. Some of the Negro Leaguers who suited up for the Page Fence Giants even played for an integrated minor-league squad known as the Adrian Demons (before baseball's color line became a de facto rule) that at one point included Honus Wagner. The Giants were a dominant force in the Negro Leagues, reaching their peak of popularity and success in 1896. This advertising trade card from the following season features team captain Grant "Home Run" Johnson, along with Charlie Grant, George Taylor, George Wilson, Joe Miller, Billy Holland, Gus Parsons (manager), Pete Burns, Fred Van Dyke, William Binga and Vasco Graham. Measuring 3-1/2" x 4-1/2", the card aptly has a reverse ad for Page Woven Wire Fence that reads, "PLAY BALL! PLAY BALL! MAKE FENCE! / Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might." PR/FR condition with a chipped left edge and unidentified handwritten name/place notations on reverse.
