Nicknamed "The Powerhouse," Spellman had tremendous influence in religious and political circles as the Archbishop of New York from 1939 to 1967. He was made a cardinal by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Multiple sources also report that he was gay and maintained homosexual relationships. Offered is a Spellman portrait (10x13, NM) that's housed in a vintage matte (13-1/2" x 17-1/2", VG) with the personalized signature and salutation, "Devotedly, gratefully, prayerfully," as well as the photographer's handwritten copyright line, "F.M. Bauman / N.Y." Auction LOA from JSA.
