Whatever the gathering, it’s readily apparent that an excited Yankees fan was determined to get his idols’ autographs on the spur of the moment. The medium is an unevenly trimmed blank sheet measuring approximately 4x5. On both sides, players from the fabled 1956 roster have signed in blue ballpoint. Bold scriptings average (“9”) quality and include: Bauer, Carey, Coleman, Collins, Herzog, Howard (d.1980), Hunter, Larsen, Lieb (sportswriter), Martyn, Morgan, Silvera, Sturdivant, Terry and Throneberry. Note: these signatures were likely compiled during the Yankees’ 1956 spring training session in St. Petersburg, Florida. A vintage handwritten notation reads “NY 1956.” Additionally, although Herzog never played for the Yankees in a regular season game, he had been signed by the club in 1949 and remained in the minor league system until being traded to the Washington Senators on April 2, 1956.
